Open, edit and save
- Choose Open, or press Command-O, and select a PDF.
- Pick a page and text block in the tools panel. Edit the replacement text and choose Apply text edit.
- Command-S applies a pending text draft and saves to the original. Save Copy creates a separate PDF and switches editing to that copy.
bitPDF checks for changes made by another app before saving. If the original changed externally, keep your edits with Save Copy, then compare the files.
To change an image, choose it in the image list first, then use Replace Image…, Position & Size…, Rotate or Flip. The selected image stays selected while you work. Emoji can’t be added to PDF text. bitPDF embeds text with fonts that don’t include emoji, and it tells you if a text edit needs characters it can’t add.
Client Packets
Choose File > Client Packets…. A checklist lists the documents a client packet needs (2 to 8). For each document, enter part of its filename and the pages to include (“all”, or ranges such as 1-3,5). Optionally enter the client’s name as it appears on the pages; bitPDF checks for that exact text. Save the checklist, then choose a client’s folder. bitPDF blocks export if a document is missing, more than one file matches, a page range doesn’t exist, the client’s name isn’t found, or a file changed after checking. Fix the inputs, check again, then choose Export Packet… to save a new PDF. Your original files are not changed. The client-name check looks for text; it does not verify identity. Make scanned pages searchable first if they need the check. You can keep up to 20 saved checklists.
Searchable scans
On an image-only page, choose Make Page Searchable. English text recognition runs locally through Apple Vision. A progress indicator and Cancel button appear while processing. The first recognition may take longer as macOS initializes its models. Review recognized text before relying on it: names, dates and amounts can be misread. Correct searchable text changes search and copy results while preserving the scan's printed appearance.
Forms, comments and pages
Fill Form lists supported fields and their current values. Choose a field, enter its value or select a checkbox/option, and Apply. Select text in the PDF before choosing Highlight Selection. Add Note creates a page comment; Manage Comments lets you navigate or delete a comment. The page tools insert another PDF after the current page or extract selected pages to a new PDF.
Recovery and originals
Work on a private copy until you save. bitPDF keeps unsaved edits and text drafts in its sandbox for recovery. After an interrupted session, choose Recover to review them. Saving or explicitly discarding changes clears that recovery record. If a recovery copy fails its integrity check, bitPDF preserves it privately for troubleshooting and leaves the original untouched.
Compatibility
bitPDF 1.1 requires an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later. Documents are limited to 80 MiB and 2,000 pages. OCR supports English on image-only pages. Password-locked PDFs, digital signing, secure redaction and export to Office formats are outside this release. Editing existing text can change spacing or wrapping; inspect the result before saving. Digitally signed files are protected against edits that would invalidate their signatures.
