Which version are you using? The Mac App Store currently lists version 1.0. Version1.1 has been submitted to Apple and is not available yet. The step-by-step refreshed interface below applies to 1.1. Check your version in Extract Any File → About Extract Any File.
Unpack. And carry on.
Extract Any File is a free Mac archive extractor. Common formats include ZIP, RAR,7z, TAR and GZIP. Format support depends on the archive and version you are using.
If you have version 1.0
The previous interface is still the public download. Open Extract Any File and use its archive-opening controls to select your file. The refreshed buttons below will appear when 1.1 is available. Check the Mac App Store listing for the version offered to your Mac.
The refreshed 1.1 workflow
- Drop one or more archives onto Drop your archives here, or choose Choose archives…. You can also press ⌘O.
- Select the archive or batch you want to open.
- Choose a destination folder and click Extract Here.
- Wait for extraction to finish, then choose Show extracted files ↗ to open the output in Finder.
Your originals stay put
In 1.1, every archive gets a new output folder. Existing files are preserved; if a folder name is already used, the app creates a numbered folder. Original archives are not deleted.
Passwords and cancellation
If an archive needs a password,1.1 asks you for it. Get the password from the person who created the archive. Choose Cancel to stop extraction; partial files may remain in the destination. Inspect those files before deciding what to remove.
Compatibility
The current 1.0 listing supports macOS 10.10 or later. The submitted 1.1 refresh requires macOS 12 or later and includes native Apple silicon support. Extracting in 1.1 happens locally on your Mac. Read the Extract 1.1 privacy information.
